Who are the Juffureh Band?

West-African Music ensemble earlier also known as Super Juffureh Band International and temporarily performing as side project Dembadou Band 2009

Genres:   World Music / Afro Manding / Gambian Afrobeat / Dance Music / African Funk / Independent Music…

According to critics, they are »one of the most influential bands in The Gambia«, but still mostly »[u]nknown to the Western listener. Active since the 1980s. Powered by the Jarju Brothers. Utilising electric guitar, drums, bass and keyboard to mix and adapt the different elements of traditional Gambian music and culture to create a new Gambian sound.« (Chicken Attack Records, G.B., that produced and distributes the before 2019 E.P. »Abarake Bake«.)

Guitar: Mamina Jarju. (E.P. courtesy of Chicken Attack Records)

»The band is named after a powerful historic village in The Gambia, where slaves were transported to America and Europe. This is the village where a brave slave called Kunta Kinteh was born. His name spread in most parts of the world. We named the band after this village to sustain the historic momentum and name of the village.« — »Juffureh Band is a long time band from the early nineteen-eighties. A lot of musicians passed through this band. We recorded few albums, and two among them, one was done with musicians from England, and another one with a saxophone player from Germany.« (Founding member A.S.J.)

In the beginning the musicians were dependend to construct their own musical devices. Still they welcome technical support regarding musical instruments that are hard to obtain in The Gambia for them, further they need financial support of their musical work.

Latest line-up: Mamina Jarju electric guitar, Mafougi Jammeh (may he rest in peace!) vocal, Ebrima Jammeh vocal, Haruna Jassey vocal, Amadou Tailor keyboards, Ebou Jarju bass, Lamin Drammeh drums and percussion, Ansuman Saine percussion; founding member Abdou (Sam) Jarju kora, guitar, keyboard and sound engineering.
